Better Cotton (previously BCI Better Cotton Initiative) is a not-for-profit organization that exists to help cotton communities thrive and survive, while protecting and restoring the environment.
Through Better Cotton and its partners, farmers receive training on how to use water efficiently, care for the health of the soil and natural habitats, reduce the use of the most harmful chemicals and apply decent work principles. Better Cotton farmers implementing this system are licensed to sell Better Cotton.
What are the benefits of mass balance ?
By using a system of mass balance, Better Cotton is able to reach more farmers, meaning more sustainable practices are being implemented around the world. Retailers pay a fee to Better Cotton, dependent on the volume of cotton they source as Better Cotton. Better Cotton is then able to channel that money directly back into field-level activities, such as training and capacity building. Better Cotton delivered training and support to 2.7 million farmers in the 2019/20 cotton season.
Better Cotton is not physically traceable to end products but farmers benefit from the demand for Better Cotton in equivalent volumes to those we source.
